In this lesson, you will discover your preferred learning style and how to study based on learning strategies that support your learning style. You will learn to set goals and break them down into smaller tasks. You will understand strategies to remember the information you have read and reinforce learning, and make organized notes for review. You will know how to monitor your progress, evaluate your learning and make improvements.

 

Kickoff to Success - Goal Setting and Time Management 

In this lesson, you will demonstrate time, task, and resource management skills by organizing and implementing a productive plan of work.  You will explore and adopt techniques for setting and following through on priorities, avoiding procrastination and distractions, and starting projects ahead of deadlines.

Creative Writing: Telling Your Story

Sometimes we forget that writing can be a joy. Through a series of fun writing exercises and inspirational readings, you’ll remember (or discover) how much fun Creative Writing can be! You’ll gather useful tips on how to make your personal stories and journal entries more interesting and readable. You’ll also learn how to create a character, how to plan a fictional story, and how to structure your story to entice your reader. Clear lessons and printable worksheets will help you brush up on word choice, sentence structure, sentence variation and punctuation.

Everyday Life - Baking Math

Baking Math is a course to help you become a better baker by understanding the math and science involved with baking yummy desserts. In this course, you’ll learn how to read a recipe, understand how ratios are used to adjust proportions, and how fractions are used to measure dry and wet ingredients. You’ll also learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions to adjust recipes, and some of the science behind what happens when you mix certain ingredients and then heat them in an oven. Finally, you’ll learn about measuring time and temperature, and how you can use the metric system to measure by weights.

Everyday Life - Healthy Eating

This course explores the skills needed to make healthy food choices and plan a balanced diet.  It uses real-life documents, like Canada’s new Food Guide (2019), sales flyers, coupons, food labels and store shelf labels.  The new guide is a big change because the food groups and serving sizes have been removed.  This course covers how to follow the new guide, compare unit price, product size and nutrient facts so you can make healthy choices and save money.  Learners study the floor plan of a grocery store and are taught how to prepare to shop using lists and managing their time to make shopping trips more enjoyable and focus on healthy eating.

Everyday Life - Identifying & Counting Canadian Money

If you’re new to Canada or if you just want to learn more about identifying and counting Canadian money, this course will help you begin to manage your day-to-day finances. You’ll learn about Canadian currency, its worth and the Canadian symbols displayed on each bill and coin. You’ll also learn how basic numeracy skills can help you count and keep track of your money, taking the first steps to prepare you for employment that requires money handling skills.

Everyday Life - Shopping with Cash

Understanding if you have enough money to buy something and if you are getting the correct change after you make a purchase are important life skills. This course will improve your cash calculation skills by introducing concepts of counting up to make change and making complex payments to receive the fewest coins and bills in change. It will also give pointers about rounding up and down to the nearest dollar to estimate purchase amounts and rounding up and down to the nearest nickel to make purchases without pennies.

A lot of skills are need to make healthy, affordable meals for yourself and family! If you are looking for some help or inspiration, this course is for you. You will learn about budgeting and shopping for groceries to get the most value for your money. Other topics include meal planning, working in the kitchen, and cooking with your family's health in mind. This course includes a variety of delicious, easy-to-make recipes that use simple, inexpensive ingredients. You will also complete a math activity each week that will help you when shopping and cooking.

Money Matters - Spending Plans

This course is about spending plans.  A spending plan is a plan for how you will spend your money so you can best meet your needs and goals.  A spending plan also helps you find ways to put aside money for the future.  Putting aside money for the future can include saving for your child's education or saving for a car or home.  It can be anything you dream about!  In this course you will learn how to:

  • understand your money situation
  • keep track of your income and expenses
  • calculate your spending over time
  • determine your needs and wants
  • consider ways to save, like comparison shopping and using coupons
  • make a spending plan that works for you

Reading to Understand the Ontario Driver's G1 Knowledge Test

The first step to becoming a licensed driver in Ontario is passing the Written (Knowledge) Test. Do you have the reading skills to do well on the test? This course will help you prepare for the kinds of questions you might see. You will examine how to read the questions in order to answer them correctly. You will learn how to identify traffic signs and interpret diagrams. You will also learn about seatbelts, traffic signs, speed limits, meeting a school bus, the Demerit Point System, passing other vehicles and rules of the road.

Thriving as a Family is a course to help you and your family learn to thrive and grow together. What goals do you want to achieve for yourself and your family? Do you want to be more active, save money, and eat healthier? In this course, you will create a challenge for yourself and reflect on how it went. You will learn about your spending habits by reviewing your household cash flow budget and exploring strategies to save money. You will learn tips to be a savvy shopper and become confident in your spending and your financial goals. You will find new ways to stay active that won't strain your budget, keep organized and plan to replenish your energy and reflect on what is important to you.

Budgeting for Beginners

A budget is a plan for your money. We use budgets to guide decisions about spending and saving. In this class, we explain how to find a monthly income, list and balance expenses and set financial goals. We also look at some easy to use online budgeting tools. These skills will help you feel more in control of your finances and more confident to make decisions. It's never too late to get started with a budget and we are here to help!
Note: Students should be able to add and subtract before taking this class.

As a Canadian, what are your rights and responsibilities? Just how does the government work? Who do I talk to about an issue? Learn how our government is structured in Canada and just what rights you have as a Canadian!

 

Kitchen Club: Part 1

Kitchen Club is a fun way to improve your math and baking skills!
In Part 1, we take the fear out of fractions! Learn steps to add, subtract and reduce fractions when baking. Understand how to use ratios and learn how to read a recipe correctly. We also talk about dry ingredients and give tips for measuring. For homework, follow our recipe for a baking creation. Share how you did when you come back for Part 2!

 

Kitchen Club: Part 2

Kitchen Club is a fun way to improve your math and baking skills!
In Part 2, we look at measuring wet ingredients and continue to learn about fractions in recipes. We show steps for using improper fractions and give tips for doubling or halving a recipe.  For homework, create a refreshing and fancy drink. Share your creation with the group in Part 3!
