You will learn ways to demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness. You will familiarize yourself with mathematical skills and proofreading skills required to complete common workplace tasks. You will determine the computer hardware and software requirements in business and how to organize files and folders. Safe Food Handling Prep

This course introduces the principles of food safety and describes cross-contamination and food allergies. You will learn procedures for storing, prepping, cooking, cooling and reheating foods. You will learn the correct use of gloves and other hygiene practices. You will learn the difference between cleaning and sanitizing. This course also focuses on how to implement time and temperature control to prevent food contamination at various stages in the flow of food handling.

Accounting Basics

This course gives you the basics of accounting and bookkeeping. Learn the nature of accounting and how careers in accounting compare to bookkeeping. You will explore the characteristics of a corporation, partnership, franchise, or sole proprietorship business and the importance of double-entry accounting. You will classify the accounts of a service business as assets, liabilities or owner's equity; understand the relationship between an income statement, revenue and expense accounts and owner's equity; and analyze and record transactions in the general journal.

Working in Retail

This course explores the skills needed to work in retail stores. You will learn to identify and understand the value of Canadian coins and bills, practise counting cash and making change, along with reading and writing money amounts, using both numbers and words. You will explore point of sale, learning the difference between cash registers and point of sale programs. As well, you will practise counting your float at the beginning of a shift and reconciling your sales at the end of a shift. You will learn to distinguish between size symbols and sort by number, letter size and colour. You will discover what UPC numbers are and how they are used. You will also understand how to stock shelves and face merchandise.

Workplace Essentials 1- Soft Skills

This course will introduce and reinforce the importance of time management, adaptability, motivation, attitude, and accountability in the workplace. It encourages building problem solving skills using creativity and innovation. It explores ways in which collaboration, communication, teamwork, and leadership play an important role in building and maintaining positive relationships with others at work. This is the first part of a 3-part course.

Workplace Safety and Rights

This course explores workplace safety. You will learn to understand the rights and responsibilities of both employers and workers for workplace safety. You will be able to identify and categorize common workplace hazards, recognize WHMIS pictograms and take steps to prevent accidents and be safe at work. You learn how to write a hazard report. You will learn about laws from the Employment Standards Act and Human Rights Code and how they protect you. You will learn how to read a pay stub and to know which deductions are legal or illegal to be deducted from your wages.

In this first class, we introduce you to the basic steps for creating a Résumé.  A résumé is a 1-2 page document that tells an employer your qualifications, skills, education and work history.  We will talk about these sections and give you strategies to make your résumé clear, attractive and professional.  We will also share websites and free services you can use for help.

Employment Success is seven-part series that will help you get ready for your next job.  These are short sessions that give you the tips you need to move forward with your goals! 

In the third class, we talk about Interviews. Interviews are a way for an employer to meet you and learn more about your qualifications.  It is also a chance for you to ask questions and learn more about the company or organization.   It is normal to be nervous for an interview, but being prepared can help us control nerves and have a better experience.  We can do this in a number of ways and we will review them together.  We will also look at online interviews, which are becoming more common as we live through the COVID-19 pandemic. 

 

Employment Success Series 4: Workplace Expectations

Employment Success is seven-part series that will help you get ready for your next job.  They are short sessions that give an introduction to a topic.  Taking these classes will improve your confidence and give you the tips you need to move forward with your goals!  If you are nervous about making a good impression at a new job, you are not alone. The workplace can be confusing with so many rules to follow.  

In the fourth class, we talk about Expectations.  You will learn what employers expect from you when it comes to behaviour and communication.  You will learn how to prepare for your first day and get tips to use when faced with a challenge.  We will also explain some of your rights as an employee when it comes to your pay, breaks and safety.

Employment Success is seven-part series that will help you get ready for your next job.  They are short sessions that give an introduction to a topic.  Taking these classes will improve your confidence and give you the tips you need to move forward with your goals!

Communicating at work is challenging.  Everyone has different personalities and ways of expressing themselves.  If you want to succeed at work, you need to communicate and listen well.  In our fifth class, you will learn how to improve your listening skills, how to handle difficult people at work, how your body language affects others and how communication styles and rules change in our digital world.

 

Employment Success Series 6: Email Communication

Employment Success is seven-part series that will help you get ready for your next job.  These are short sessions that give you the tips you need to move forward with your goals! 

In our sixth class, we talk about Email Communication.  We start by reviewing the parts of an email and the features that are commonly used in the workplace.  We then look at "email etiquette" - the rules we should follow when communicating digitally.  You will also learn the key skills for writing clear and effective messages.  Finally, we will work through some email scenarios together, to learn best ways to respond when faced with a challenge. 

 

Employment Success Series 7: Workplace Documents

Employment Success is seven-part series to help you get ready for your next job. These are short sessions that give the tools you need to move forward with your goals!

In our final class, we talk about the documents you might see in your first week on the job. Some of these include, welcome packages, policy and safety manuals, payroll and tax forms, as well as benefits applications and vacation request forms. All this paperwork can be overwhelming, but being prepared will help! We show you common forms and give tips for reading and completing them.

 

Soft Skills Series 1 – Problem Solving & Conflict Resolution

Soft Skills is a 3-part series. In this class, we discuss the process of overcoming obstacles by reviewing the steps to problem solving: identifying the problem, gathering all the information to explore solutions, implementing solutions, and reflecting on the outcome. This class helps you identify the many ways in which conflict can arise in the workplace. We provide you with the essential tools which will help you navigate the process of finding an effective solution.

 

Soft Skills Series 2  – Teamwork & Leadership

Soft Skills is a 3-part series. In this class, we outline the importance of teamwork and leadership in the workplace. Teamwork and leadership skills improve workplace morale, boosts engagement, builds connectedness and confidence in the workplace. We review the essential skills needed to be an effective team player and leader. This class identifies the skills required to collaborate effectively within a team – Trust, Communication, Respect, Problem Solving Skills, and Cooperation.
