High School Credit and PLAR

Please note: The LearningHUB does not offer secondary school credits to go towards your OSSD; we do offer academic skills-upgrading courseware to help you prepare for secondary school credits.

Lessons

  • Lessons use tutorials and quizzes.
  • Tutorials have slides with text and pictures.
  • Learners can use the built-in screen reader.
  • Other learning tools include dictionaries, translators and text highlighting.
  • After watching a tutorial, learners complete a short quiz to check their knowledge.

Learners will be assigned lessons from our Writing Skills curriculum to build readiness for English high school credits or the PLAR English Assessment.

 

Math

Learners will be assigned lessons from our Essential Math curriculum to build readiness for Math high school credits or the PLAR Math Assessments.

 

History/Geography

Learners will be assigned lessons from our Reading Strategies and Writing Skills curriculum to build readiness for the PLAR History/Geography Assessment. Learners can also take our Canadian Geography course.  See details in the Courses section.

Canadian Geography

Whether you’re hiking or planning a cross country road trip, knowing how to read a map is a practical skill to have. In this course, you will learn ways that maps are useful and practice reading them. You will explore the geography of Canada and its abundance of natural resources and how Canada’s physical features influence population size and where people and businesses choose to locate. You will read and interpret graphs to identify trends and make predictions. Lastly, you will learn why Canada is proud of its diverse population and culture.

Writing a Five-Paragraph Essay

Whether you're working toward a high school credit or assessment, preparing for higher education or a workplace report, clarity and organization in your writing is essential. In this course, you will learn to 

  • identify parts of a five-paragraph essay
  • read writing prompts and understand how to answer them
  • use strategies like brainstorming and organizing to plan your essay
  • draft your own thesis statement as well as introduction, body and concluding paragraphs
  • write and revise separate sections of each paragraph
  • revise and edit your essay draft
