Instruction and Learning
Tools
Take a virtual tour today! This page was designed for practitioners
to sample what we offer on the Learning Hub.
Centra
Demo
Centra transforms the traditional classroom into a “real time”
online delivery format. Centra is a virtual meeting space for
learners and Learning Hub practitioners to learn and teach online,
in the comfort of their own home, or in a public computer lab.
Centra is a powerful conferencing tool that uses visual slides,
audio, and video technology to host classes online. You can even
mark up a public whiteboard to share your ideas with the class!
A microphone and speakers (or headset) are required to participate
in Centra Classes. Learners should register on the Learning Hub
or notify their online practitioner they would like to participate.
Check the course calendar regularly for updates.
Moodle Demo
Moodle is a course management system where learners can log into
online courses and complete assigned course work at their own
pace. The Learning Hub practitioner monitors learner progress,
provides support and feedback, and assesses learner's work online.
Courses offer a variety of activities that include videos, quizzes,
webpage links, journal writing/opinion pages, etc. that enhance
the learning experience for the learners.
LearnScape
Demo
LearnScape offers a variety of learning modules including: Reading,
Writing, Math, Canadian Social Studies, Science, Pre-GED assessments,
Life Skills and Essential Skills. Learning Hub practitioners assign
lessons for the learner to complete at his/her own pace. Learning
Hub practitioners are able to review and track their progress
as they complete the assigned course work. LearnScape also provides
packaged courses based on the learner’s job specific goal.
Plato
Demo
Plato is similar to LearnScape and has been a resource for classroom
literacy programs for several years. PLATO has a number of lessons
that deal with more basic skills in math, reading and writing.
More advanced lessons are outlined by a number of National Occupation
Codes (NOC) and packaged lessons dealing with Essential Skills
required for each code are available. This is an extremely valuable
tool for learners with employment related goals.
Separate courses can be taken such as:
• Writing in the Workplace
• Life and Job Skills
• Business Basics
• Technology Fundamentals
• Job Skills for the Real World
Frequently
Asked Questions
Q: What happens when I refer a learner to the Learning
Hub?
A: The learner fills out the online registration
form and a Learning Hub practitioner contacts them within 3 business
days to set up their learning plan.
Q: How do I track my learner’s progress?
A: The Learning Hub practitioners will communicate
progress back to the referring agency upon request. We need to
hear from you! When a learner registers with us we don’t always
know by whom they have been referred. This information can be
included in the “Comments” section of the registration form, or
you can contact us directly. We invite you to share your expectations
with us so we can collaborate and serve your learner the best
we can!
Q: How do I know what opportunities are available on
the Learning Hub?
A: The Learning Hub is proud to report we
have curriculum and upgrading tools for Reading, Writing, Canadian
Social Studies, Science, Math, Pre-GED Prep and Essential Skills.
We are always enhancing our resources, check our website regularly
for updates! Looking for something we don’t offer yet? Just ask!
Q: Can a learner participate in both e-Channel and regular
LBS programs at the same time?
A: Yes. e-Channel was developed for learners
who can not access traditional LBS programs, however, it is also
ideal to supplement classroom LBS programs if practitioners are
looking for a way to maximize their classroom time.
Q: How do we record contact hours?
A: The referring agency can count contact
hours if their learner accesses the Learning Hub at the referral
site (i.e. in their classroom/lab). The Learning Hub tracks enrollment
of each learner who accesses our program.
Q: When can learners use the Learning Hub?
A: Learners can access their online courses
on LearnScape, Plato or Moodle 24 hours/day 7 days/week. Support
from their Learning Hub practitioner is just an email away. Centra
classes are scheduled for specific class times, however, the playback
of the session is always available.
Q: Do all learners use Centra, Moodle, LearnScape &
Plato?
A: Not necessarily. Learning Hub practitioners
assign work according to the learner’s goals. For example, someone
who is looking for Pre-GED Prep may be assigned to LearnScape
while someone who is looking for help with fractions may participate
in a Centra class. Any learner can use any number of the Learning
Hub resources at any time, each learner has a customized path
created with their online practitioner.
Q: I would like my learner to access lessons on Plato.
Do they have to register on the Learning Hub?
A: Yes, MTCU funded the e-Channel Plato
licences that are available through the Learning Hub. By having
a central location we are better equipped to track usage and learner
progress.
Q: Can I instruct on the Learning Hub?
A: As we continue to expand our services
we will also be expanding our network of online literacy practitioners.
In order to use Centra, practitioners require Level 2 Centra 7.5
training. Please contact us for more information.
