Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What happens when I refer a learner to the LearningHUB?

The learner fills out the online registration form and a LearningHUB practitioner forwards an intake assessment to the learner to help set up their learning plan within 3 business days. This intake assessment contains questions that will help the LearningHUB better serve the needs of the learner.  Please note that Independent Study registrations for the LearningHUB may be placed on a waiting list until a space becomes available. With some exceptions the Waiting List for independent /Short Courses will be managed on a first come, first served basis.

  2. When learners are taking a lot of different online courses, how can I stay on top of what everyone is doing and what progress they are making?

Every learner registered with the LearningHUB is assigned an online practitioner who acts as a mentor throughout their learning. You can receive monthly/tri-monthly (you decide) reports of your learner’s progress simply by having your learner 1) list your name and contact information in the support field when they register for a course and 2) make a request in the comment section for progress updates. LearningHUB practitioners also send out progress report reports to both the learners and their classroom practitioners in January and June. Reports can be printed off and placed in the learner’s file.

  3. What level of expertise would I need to support learners taking online learning? I don’t have time to take training myself, and I’m not exactly a computer whiz!

You don’t have to be. Once you locate the website (learninghub.ca), you need to be able to direct your student to the register button and help them complete the registration form. That’s it. It would be helpful to know a little bit about downloading, but it isn’t essential. The LearningHUB has technical practitioners who can help with that. They can assist by phone, or by email. They can even gain temporary control of your learner’s computer through a program called LogMeInRescue and complete the download for you.

  4. How do programs fit online learning into regular programming? Don’t things get a little crazy?

It certainly takes some management to offer flexible learning in a classroom setting; however, once you’ve made the initial foray into online learning, you’ll find it is more a help than a hindrance. Most LBS practitioners start out slowly. One way is to register learners with common goals in a Live Class such as Understanding Fractions or writing an Essay. With Live Classes, the lesson is taught and the learner is introduced to the skill sets involved. LearningHUB practitioners they follow up by providing more opportunities to practice. All Live Classes are taped for playback, so if the learner continues to have difficulty, s/he can review the Live Class recording as many times as necessary.

  5. How do I know what courses are available on the LearningHUB?

The LearningHUB is proud to report we have curriculum and upgrading tools for Reading, Writing, Canadian Social Studies, Science, Math, GED Prep and Essential Skills. Our printable course catalogue is available on the homepage of our website.  We are always enhancing our resources, check our website regularly for updates! Looking for something we don’t offer yet? Just ask!

  6. Can a learner participate in both e-Channel and regular LBS programs at the same time?

Yes. e-Channel was developed for learners who can not access traditional LBS programs, however, it is also an option for flexible learning to your program.

  7. Will my program lose contact hours if our learners take LBS training online?

The LearningHUB does not count contact hours, only number of registered learners. When a learner attends Live Classes, or completes an Independent Study course with the LearningHUB, the contact hours are collected by the sponsoring program.

  8. When can learners use the LearningHUB?

Learners can access their Independent Study courses 24 hours/day 7 days/week. Support from their LearningHUB practitioner is just an email away. Live Classes are scheduled for a specific date and time, however, the playback of the session is always available once the class is over.

  9. Do all learners use Centra, Moodle, LearnScape & Plato programs?

Not necessarily. LearningHUB practitioners assign work according to the learner’s goals. For example, someone who is looking for GED Prep may sign up for Independent Study and access courses on LearnScape while someone who is looking for help with fractions may participate in a Live Class on Centra. Any learner can use any number of the LearningHUB resources at any time, each learner has a customized path created with their online practitioner.

  10. I would like my learner to access lessons on Plato. Do they have to register with the LearningHUB?

Yes, MTCU funded the e-Channel Plato licences that are available through the LearningHUB. By having a central location we are better equipped to track usage and learner progress.

  11. Can I instruct classes on behalf of the LearningHUB?

As we continue to expand our services we are expanding our network of online literacy practitioners. If you are trained to instruct classes using Centra, please contact us for employment opportunities.
